Gum Recession Treatment
In Philadelphia

Many people don’t notice small losses of gum tissue along the gumline, but when roots are exposed due to receding gums, most people will notice the resulting tooth sensitivity. If not treated properly, gum recession can lead to cosmetic issues, tooth decay, and even loss of teeth.

Contrary to myths that gum recession occurs naturally as one grows older, recession is never normal regardless of a person’s age. There are many causes of receding gums including periodontal disease, overly aggressive brushing of the teeth, orthodontic treatment (such as braces), the shape of your teeth and roots, and improper tooth alignment. Fortunately, this recession is very treatable if caught before serious consequences occur.

Dr. I. Stephen Brown counsels all patients who suffer from sensitive teeth or notice receding gums to come in for a comprehensive exam to evaluate the risk of future progression. Depending on the extent of your gum recession, he may recommend a variety of treatment options designed to restore lost gum tissue and prevent further recession. Treatments include natural soft tissue regeneration procedures and the new Pinhole Surgical Technique™.

A Breakthrough Treatment for Receding Gums

The Pinhole Surgical Technique™ was developed by Dr. John Chao as a minimally invasive treatment for moderate to advanced gum recession. This new procedure replaces the need for gum grafting, in which the periodontist takes a flap of donor tissue, usually from the palate, and sutures it to the existing gum tissue. While the traditional grafting procedure is effective, it requires significant cutting, stitches, and healing time.

Dr. Brown was among the first periodontists in the world, and the first in Philadelphia, to master the Pinhole procedure by studying with Dr. Chao himself. In this procedure Dr. Brown will use a needle to make a small hole in the gum tissue, through which he will use specialized tools to gently loosen the gums and reposition the gumline. Recovery time is short because there is no need for donor tissue or sutures. The results are natural looking and long term.
